Imagine trekking through some of the most rugged and breathtaking terrain in the Sierra Nevada, camping under the stars at 11,000 feet, and hunting one of the most elusive birds in the high country. I have a unique wilderness permit for a Whitetail Ptarmigan hunt from September 12th to 15th, and I’m looking for two others to join me on this unforgettable adventure. This is a rare opportunity to experience backcountry hiking, camping, and hunting in a pristine environment steeped in Sierra Nevada Mountains history.

What Makes This Hunt Special

The Whitetail Ptarmigan is a unique bird adapted to high elevations and cold climates. This hunt takes place in an area near where the Sierra Ptarmigan was first introduced from the Rockies in the late 1960s. The terrain is challenging but manageable, with steep sections that require careful navigation but are not overly dangerous for experienced hunters or my Bracco dog, Kani.

The permit allows for a party of three, and I have two spots open. The season runs from September 12th to the 20th, but our hunt will be focused on the first four days. The bird limit is only two, so if we reach that early, we can either wrap up or enjoy the serenity of the wilderness for the rest of the trip.

The Physical Challenge

This is not a casual walk in the park. The hike involves:

  • Over 4,000 feet of elevation gain

  • A round trip distance of 15 to 20 miles

  • Camping at nearly 11,000 feet above sea level

You should be comfortable with backcountry hiking and prepared for the physical demands of high altitude. The weather can be unpredictable, so packing the right gear and clothing is essential. I am looking for experienced hunters and backcountry hikers to add to safety and good company.

What to Expect on the Hunt

We will spend three nights camping in the backcountry. The days will be filled with hiking, scouting, and hunting with Kani, my Bracco, who should get the handle on where these birds are faster than we ever could! The terrain includes alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and sparse vegetation typical of high elevations.

The bird limit is low, 2 per person for day and the season, so patience and skill are key. Even if we don’t reach the limit quickly, the experience of being in such a remote and beautiful place is rewarding on its own.

Gear and Preparation

To make the most of this hunt, bring:

  • Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support

  • Layered clothing for variable weather, including warm and waterproof layers

  • Camping gear suitable for high elevation and cold nights

  • Hunting gear appropriate for upland birds

  • Navigation tools such as GPS and maps

  • Plenty of water and high-energy backcountry food

I will provide more detailed gear recommendations once the team is set.

Why Join This Hunt

This is a rare chance to hunt a unique species in a historic location with a small group. The combination of physical challenge, wilderness solitude, and the thrill of upland bird hunting makes this trip special. You will also get to experience the companionship of a skilled hunting dog in Kani, and or your own dog is welcome, but I will have to add the dog count to the reservation not a problem, which adds a rewarding dimension to the hunt.

If you enjoy backcountry adventures, appreciate nature’s quiet moments, and want to test your skills in a demanding environment, this hunt is for you.

How to Join

If this sounds like the kind of adventure you want to be part of, please reach out soon. I am looking for two committed individuals who can handle the physical demands and share the excitement of this unique hunt. Spots are limited, and the permit is already secured. No costs for the hike, and hunt its self, again I am not guiding and only looking for safety in numbers.
