Light Winter Weather Rolling In Chukar Hills Out West

It really comes down to what you’re comfortable with. Weather and bird behavior play more into shaping your hunt plan than stopping a hunt altogether.

Upland birds are either in an area or they’re not. They hold in places that provide the right mix of roosting cover, food, and water. Weather and season changes can shift how birds use an area, but they rarely clear them out of a zone completely. So when you’re looking at a forecast, the real question is: what conditions are you willing to hunt in?

For me, I like hunting in wind from about 5 to 20 mph—it actually helps the dogs pick up scent better. I’ll push it up to 40 mph if I have to, but it’s not comfortable. I also don’t care for carrying a gun in rain or heavy snow, though a light snow or overcast skies with no rain aren’t an issue for me.
